Exhibition #5 Izmir, Turkey
- 15.10.2026
The MATCH journey continues in İzmir. with its fifth exhibition in November 2026.
In May 2026, as part of the MATCH (Mediterranean as a Climate Hotspot) programme, artists Maya and Joana undertook a month-long residency at K2UBZ in İzmir. Through field research, encounters with local communities, and explorations of the surrounding landscapes and ecosystems, they investigated how nature can speak through art, revealing the interconnected relationships between people, plants, and place. In November 2026, they will share the outcomes of their research, presenting artistic approaches that explore ecological connections, local knowledge, and the voices of the more-than-human world.
Invisible Grounds brings together the work of Maya Aghniadis (Flugen) and Joana Amora, developed through their research in İzmir and Urla. Both artists look at what is often not immediately visible in a landscape: the people, practices, memories and relationships that shape it. Moving between farms, food networks, olive trees, sound and image, the exhibition connects different ways of reading and experiencing the land.
With Silent Witnesses (Al Samitoun / الصامتون), Maya Aghniadis (Flugen) creates a sound-led installation exploring the machinery of everyday life, the uprooting of olive trees, and the silenced voices and stories of the Mediterranean. Through cyanotypes, moving images and a sound piece created with a geophone, a hydrophone and acoustic and synthesised instruments, the work reveals hidden worlds beneath the surface. The olive tree becomes a symbol of rootedness, resistance, and collective memory, as its roots awaken in protest, connecting an entire ecosystem against destruction and displacement.
Joana Amora invites visitors to discover who feeds the community. She presents a two-channel film featuring ecological farmers from the Urla and İzmir region and the landscapes of their farms, alongside a photographic series documenting local foods found in ecological bazaars. Bridging the places where food is grown with the places where it reaches the people who eat it, with Gıda Toplulukları (Food Communities) she creates a cartography of the local food system and the relationships that sustain it.
